Currituck County plans to start its first beaver trapping program, similar to one used in other counties that controls - but doesn't stop - the determined dam builders.

In the past few years, beaver dams have caused flooding on farms and in forests in Moyock, Barco, Shawboro and Harbinger. A beaver downed a tree last fall that fell across Short Cut Road and caused an accident, said Mike Doxey, district technician for the Albemarle (Currituck) Soil & Water Conservation District.
