CURRITUCK

Currituck County commissioners rezoned 244 acres of Jarvisburg farm land Monday, which could triple the amount of homes allowed in an area set aside to remain rural.

The decision marks the largest tract rezoned to residential south of Coinjock since at least the 1980s, said David Webb, the county's chief planner.

Commissioners agreed to rezone 226 acres from agricultural to residential and 18 acres from agricultural to commercial in one tract about three miles south of Grandy along U.S. 158. The planning staff recommended approval to residential but not to commercial.
