JARVISBURG

Steve Edwards stood alone in the center of small corral Friday with Croatan, an older Corolla wild stallion known for stubbornness when he roamed the northern Outer Banks.

About 40 spectators watched from outside the white fencing as Edwards demonstrated his control over a wild horse that six months ago was galloping among the dunes and vanishing in maritime forests.

"Trot," he commanded.

Croatan trotted.

The smallish brown horse stopped, turned, walked and trotted as Edwards commanded. Croatan easily allowed Edwards to saddle and ride him around the corral.
