There's a mystery brewing in North Carolina. John Wayne has been kidnapped! He was taken from Muleskinners Saloon in the Currituck County town of Barco.
"This is a pub where you can come and drink a beer and not have people give you crap", says bar patron Sandra Reill.
But there is a burning question: Where is John Wayne? He's missing, maybe even kidnapped.
A cardboard cutout of Wayne was last seen in the bar's entryway. Muleskinners owner Al Maver is a big fan.
Three weeks ago, "The Duke" disappeared from his perch. Soon after, letters and pictures began to arrive. They explained why Wayne went away.
"The first one said he had a good time staying here but it was just time to hit the happy trail. That was the return address on the letter, happy trail," says Maver.
Since then, more letters and photos have been sent in. John Wayne seems to be taking the county by storm.
"He's hooked up with Pamela Anderson, some horses down in the county, he's having a real good time," says Maver.
The gang at the bar isn't too concerned. They're getting a good laugh out of this, just waiting for the day when the saloon doors swing open and the cardboard cowboy makes his return.
"He said he'd be back, so we're just waiting on him," Maver says.
