The catwalk on the ocean side of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet will be closed today at 10 a.m. to prepare for its upcoming fence replacement.
The state Department of Transportation said Monday that anglers will still be able to fish off the catwalk on the west side for the time being.
DOT bridge maintenance engineer John S. Abel Jr. said the DOT is getting a jump start on the $45,000 fence replacement project scheduled to start later this month.
Abel said concrete will be repaired and the 1,000 feet of steel fence and posts on each side be will replaced by an aluminum fence.

Fencing on the narrow walkways on the bridge's south end has been cut and bent by some fishers so they can get under the bridge to fish off pilings, but Abel said the east catwalk is in the worst condition.
A Virginia fisherman drowned last month after he slipped from a bridge piling from which he was fishing. He had earlier climbed down through the catwalk fence on the east side of the bridge.
When restoration of the catwalk is completed on the east side, work will begin on the west side. Abel said the work will not interfere with traffic on the bridge.
