A student at John A. Holmes High School was arrested in Edenton Thursday after he was discovered on campus with a stolen handgun.According to a press release, a school resource officer at Holmes noticed suspicious activity in the student parking lot on a video surveillance camera before the start of school Thursday morning. The officer found the unloaded gun and an empty ammunition clip during a search of a student.Edenton-Chowan School officials did not release the student's name, but he is believed to be 18 or 19 years old and a junior at the school. He was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen firearm. The gun, a .40-caliber handgun, was one of several stolen on May 9 from Bob's Gun Shop in Chowan County, the press release stated.Chowan County Sheriff Dwayne Goodwin said the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been contacted and additional charges could follow as the investigation continues. No one was hurt during the incident and no shots were fired. Several other individuals were questioned, but no other charges were filed.Kerri Albertson, Edenton-Chowan Schools community relations director, said the school was not locked down because law enforcement did not advise it. She said teachers were sent memos notifying them of the incident. Most students found out about the incident on their own, she said."The grapevine is very strong," Albertson said.Parents also weren't contacted following the gun's discovery, she said.Albertson would not comment on what disciplinary action the school plans to take against the student. She said that bringing a weapon to school could merit a 365-day suspension, but added that specific disciplinary action is taken on a case-by-case basis.(Contact Zac Goldstein atzgoldstein@coxnc.com)Sponsored Links
